Maratou, Eleftheria, Faculty, English Language Arts

Ms. Eleftheria Maratou is originally from New York and earned both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Education, along with a minor in English Literature, from St. John’s University. She holds a permanent teaching license from the New York State Education Department.
She began her career teaching High School English Literature (Grades 9–12) in Queens, New York. She has also worked as an ESL teacher. In this role, she has prepared students ranging from age 12 to adults for all levels of English language proficiency exams, and she serves as an MLA examiner with the Hellenic American Union.
Since joining ACS in 2013, Ms. Maratou has taught 5th Grade, Language Arts 6/6 ESL, EFL 6 LA, and 8th Grade LA, and she has mentored student teachers. She currently teaches 7th and 8th Grade Language Arts and serves as the school’s Professional Development Coordinator. In addition, she is an NSRF-certified CFG coach and has facilitated the ACS Collaborative Learning Communities.
Eleftheria Maratou is a published contributor, having authored two chapters for the Handbook of Research on K–12 Blended and Virtual Learning Through the i2Flex Classroom Model and written educational articles for the school magazine Ethos.
Ms. Maratou has presented internationally, including a workshop on growth mindset strategies at the 2019 NESA Conference. She has also presented at the 2016 ACS Colloquium with demonstrations of student learning. Her goal is to equip students with the tools and confidence to become independent learners, effective communicators, and critical thinkers. As she believes, quoting Benjamin Franklin: "Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I learn."
